Waste Hierarchy


Article 4 of the revised EU Waste Framework Directive (Directive 2008/98/EC) sets out the ‘waste hierarchy’, five steps for dealing with waste, ranked according to environmental impact:
1. prevention (best outcome for the environment). 2. re-use. 3. recycling. 4. other recovery. 5. disposal (worst outcome for the environment)
